Construction Project Accountant

Job Summary

The Project Accountant will be responsible for monitoring the financial progress of construction projects including the processing and tracking of invoices/billings while ensuring proper recordkeeping in the accounting system. This role will coordinate primarily with the construction and development division and ensure all accounting standard operating procedures and policies are followed.

Role / Responsibilities

  • Utilize accounting software to record, store, code, and analyze project-related financial information.
  • Perform general cost accounting and other related duties related to construction projects.
  • Participate in project budgeting and forecasting discussions and maintain required budget and forecast documentation.
  • Support implementation and continuous improvement of job cost accounting system.
  • Work closely with contracts / compliance team to code and set up new contracts for billing and tracking purposes.
  • Prepare client billings and assist with the collection of accounts receivable by coordinating with project teams.
  • Track all project’s costs from invoice to payment (process, code, and enter invoices, purchase orders, work orders, and subcontractor requests for payments).
  • Prepare and document items required for subcontractor check releases, including Releases of Lien and Releases of Claim as required.
  • Input project change orders into the accounting system.
  • Monitor and update project specific logs as needed.
  • Prepare and distribute project-specific reports as needed.
  • Assist in creating, documenting, and refining project accounting related processes and procedures.
  • Submit timely and accurate billing reconciliations to job cost.
  • Audit/reconcile the job cost detail.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.

Experience / Skills Required

  • Bachelor’s degree in accounting or equivalent experience.
  • Proficient computer skills and in-depth knowledge of Microsoft Outlook, Word, and Excel.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Detail-oriented.
  • Ability to effectively analyze data.
  • Ability to work independently and in teams.
  • Effective time management skills and ability to prioritize among competing responsibilities.
  • Ability to exercise sound judgement and decision-making skills.
  • Ability to uphold the highest degree of integrity and confidentiality.
  • Professional and courteous demeanor.

Experience / Skills Desired

  • Construction accounting/cost accounting experience.
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Business Central
  • Knowledge of Office 365 – Microsoft SharePoint and/or ability to learn quickly.

Physical Demands / Work Environment

  • Prolonged periods sitting at a desk and working on a computer. 
  • Must be able to lift up to 10 pounds at times.
