Job Summary

The Senior Project Manager (SPM) is responsible for the successful delivery of large, complex projects and/or the oversight of multiple concurrent projects executed by Project Managers and Assistant Project Managers. This role serves as the lead manager on marquee projects and as a people and performance leader across a portfolio of work.  The SPM operates with a strong business mindset balancing scope, schedule, budget, risk, and client relationships while intentionally developing the skills and perspective required to advance into a Project Executive role.

Role / Responsibilities

  • Serve as the Lead Project Manager on large, high-risk, or high-visibility projects from preconstruction through closeout.
  • Directly accountable for overall project performance including safety compliance, financial results (budget, forecasting, cost control), schedule management, quality standards and risk mitigation.
  • Make senior-level decisions related to staffing, sequencing, and problem resolution on assigned projects.
  • Act as the primary escalation point for project-level challenges and client concerns.
  • Review project budgets, schedules, and risk registers regularly and intervene proactively when trends indicate potential issues for your portfolio of projects.
  • Work with senior leadership team to balance resource allocation across projects to optimize performance and workload.
  • Lead a portfolio of projects executed by PMs and Assistant PMs.
  • Directly manage and mentor Project Managers and Assistant Project Managers.
  • Participate in hiring, onboarding, performance reviews, and succession planning.
  • Promotes a culture of safety and enforces safety protocols on all job sites.
  • Coordinates with engineers, subcontractors, suppliers, and internal teams.
  • Oversee subcontractor performance and ensure adherence to specifications and timelines.
  • Performs regular site visits to monitor work progress and ensure safety compliance.
  • Resolves conflicts or issues that arise during the project lifecycle.
  • Maintains communication with clients and stakeholders throughout the project.
  • Generates reports on project status, changes, risks, and progress.
  • Perform all other duties as assigned.

Experience / Skills Required

  • 5+ years of experience managing heavy civil or horizontal construction projects.
  • Proven knowledge of grading, utilities, paving, and related site development.
  • Proficiency in project management software and construction technology.
  • Strong understanding of construction contracts, submittals, RFIs, and change orders.
  • Strong knowledge of industry standards, government safety and occupational health and safety requirements.
  • Sound judgment, problem-solving skills, and decision-making abilities.
  • Desire to self-manage and assume ownership over job responsibilities.
  • Strong leadership, organizational, time management and planning skills.
  • Ability to communicate, professionally, in both oral and written format.
  • Excellent recordkeeping abilities.
  • Demonstrate the highest degree of integrity and confidentiality.
  • Valid driver’s license and willingness to travel to job sites as needed.

Experience / Skills Desired

  • Bachelor’s degree in Construction Management, Civil Engineering, or related field preferred.
  • Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Bi-lingual (English/Spanish).

Physical Demands / Work Environment

  • Lift at least 50 lbs. regularly or as otherwise established due to physical limitations.
  • Endure continuous standing, walking, bending, kneeling, stooping, crouching, crawling, and climbing on a regular basis.
  • Ability to work outside of normal business hours and weekends in response to short-term company needs and/or emergencies.
  • Ability to travel throughout job sites as required (including out of state jobs).
  • Ability to access heights above ground level via ladders, construction equipment, etc.
  • Ability to wear and maintain appropriate personal protective equipment such as, but not limited to, safety shoes, hard hats, safety glasses, gloves, hearing protection, fall protection harness or other personal protective equipment in designated areas of risk.
  • Ability to work outside in varying weather and temperature conditions.
