Virginia Beach Company Nourishing Miami Beaches With Sand

Monday, April 6, 2020 | Virginia Beach, VA

The Garcia Companies, with corporate headquarters in Virginia Beach, is providing, through one of its affiliates, Garcia Mining Company, approximately half a million tons of sand over the next several months for the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Jacksonville District, Miami Beach Hotspots Re-nourishment Project.

The 600-acre sand mining facility, located in rural southern central Florida in Hendry County, is an integral part of the 15,000-acre Garcia Family Farm. Edward S. Garcia (1925-2019) originally purchased the working farm in 2004. It is now part of his ongoing legacy and an integral part of the South Florida community.

In addition to the sand mine, the farm operates orange groves and row crops that produce products marketed all over the United States as well as above ground water storage and water filtration projects.  Once the sand is excavated over the next decade, it will provide a pristine recreational lake to augment the existing employee housing, community building, and onsite chapel.

The contract between the Army Corps and its prime contractor, Eastman Aggregate Enterprises LLC, owned by Bernie Eastman, is hauling the sand 90 miles from Garcia Family Farm to the beaches of Miami.  The product is dredged, washed, screened, stockpiled and then tested prior to delivery in order to meet strict project specifications. These include natural Miami Beach sand mineral composition requirements for grain size and color.
