Safety Manager

Job Summary

Through a combined knowledge of engineering and health and safety, the Construction/Operations Safety Manager is responsible for assessing environmental and working conditions at multiple projects sites in order to develop procedures and design systems to protect people from illness/injury and property from damage.

Role / Responsibilities

  • Conduct continuous safety inspections and walk-throughs of pending and active project sites to assess environmental and working conditions, determine potential and existing safety related risks, and ensure compliance with all government health and safety regulations.
  • Identify opportunities and develop safety standards and guidelines to minimize, eliminate and/or control workplace injuries, accidents, health problems, and other hazardous situations on project sites.
  • Collaborate with relevant parties to address and mitigate identified safety deficiencies.
  • Provide guidance for the purchase of safety supplies and personal protective equipment. Ensure appropriate personal protective equipment is recommended and utilized.
  • Actively pursue accident/incident and near miss investigations as needed.
  • Critically analyze incident reports/statistics and employee concerns to identify injury/illness trends to determine areas for increased personnel training with an emphasis on accident prevention.
  • Engage the workforce in safety/health regulations and industrial processes as a mentor/coach and subject matter lead.
  • Address appropriate action with employees and subcontractors who fail to comply with minimum safety standards.
  • Maintain open communication channel regarding safety issues.
  • Evaluate the safety performance of subcontractors.
  • Collaborate with project stakeholders to ensure consistent safety standards across all parties.
  • Foster a positive safety culture among project personnel.
  • Provide regular updates on safety performance and potential areas for improvement.
  • Perform other duties as assigned requiring the necessary skills, knowledge, abilities, and physical requirements as required by those duties described.

Experience / Skills Required

  • Bachelor’s degree in Health and Safety, Safety Engineering, Environmental Health, or relevant professional experience.
  • Knowledge of principles, methods, and techniques of safety engineering necessary to eliminate or control hazardous conditions.
  • At least five years of occupational health and safety experience in an industrial environment.
  • Critical thinking and analytical skills.
  • Correct use of instrumentation and devices associated with safety practices.
  • Professional knowledge of all government safety and occupational health standards and regulations pertaining to the specific trade/activity being managed to include OSHA and MSHA.
  • Excellent recordkeeping abilities.
  • Desire to self-manage and assume ownership over job responsibilities.
  • Dedication to continuous improvement practices.
  • Able to effectively prioritize responsibilities.
  • Able to work alone without close/direct supervision.
  • Ability to listen and receive feedback from the employee and superiors’ perspective without passing judgement.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Possession of a valid, unrestricted driver’s license.

Experience / Skills Desired

  • Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Bi-lingual (English/Spanish).

Physical Demands / Work Environment

  • Lift at least 50 lbs. regularly.
  • Ability to work in excess of normal work schedule in response to short-term company needs and/or emergencies.
  • Ability to access heights above ground level via ladders, construction equipment, etc.
  • Ability to develop safety standards and guidelines to eliminate or control hazards on job sites.
  • Ability to wear and maintain appropriate personal protective equipment such as, but not limited to, safety shoes, hard hats, safety glasses, gloves, hearing protection, fall protection harness or other personal protective equipment in designated areas of risk.
  • Prolonged periods of standing and walking.
  • Ability to travel throughout job sites to conduct safety inspections as required.
  • Must be able to travel throughout the state of Florida, and on occasion, Virginia, to project sites and corporate office. Travel to additional states may be required as the busines grows.
  • Ability to work outside in varying weather and temperature conditions. 
  • Attend and participate in required training for safety on an annual/as necessary basis.
